COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Old Savannah City Mission partnered with the Savannah Police Department on Saturday for its 5th annual Love Thy Neighborhood event — volunteers cleaned Thomas Square and nearby neighborhoods before sharing lunch.  WTOC 11
  • Neighbors gathered Saturday for a picnic under a 300-year-old oak tree along Little Neck Road to honor its designation as exceptional, which protects it from a planned Georgia Power pole expansion. The event served as a preview for a larger celebration set for Monday, Feb. 16.  WJCL

  • Savannah hosted Valentine’s weekend shows before today, including a musical at the Historic Savannah Theatre on Feb. 13, John Mulaney’s stand-up at 301 W Oglethorpe Ave, and Andrea Bocelli’s concert with the Savannah Philharmonic on Feb. 14—other events offered bluegrass, tango and a haunted park experience.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bob Sargent (Georgia DNR) warns that bald eagles nesting near development in coastal counties risk premature jumps that endanger their survival. After 11 years of aerial surveys, he will conclude his final survey next week, urging local support for conservation efforts.  Savannah Morning News
  • Environmental groups asked state regulators to cancel a new gas turbine at Plant McIntosh because they say it could force customers to pay extra costs, and the petition is set for review Feb. 18 — new commissioners call for a careful look at Georgia Power's expansion plan.  The Current
  • The National Park Service has proposed a Visitor Use Management Plan for Cumberland Island that would double the daily ferry cap to 700, add more campsites and amenities and open the draft for public comment until Feb. 21—environmental groups say the changes could harm the island’s pristine wilderness and wildlife.  The Current

  • Yesterday, hundreds of children joined local organizations and Junior League Savannah at the Savannah Children's Museum for the 14th Fit Kids Fest, where they engaged in hands-on STEM, fitness and mental-health activities like snack making and yoga.  WJCL

  • Residents in Garden City attended a housing fair Saturday morning to learn about FHA loans and conventional financing options to achieve homeownership.
