COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents at Romana Riley Lofts reported broken appliances and rising rents of about $1,000 monthly, prompting Aldermen Dietrich Leggett and Linda Wilder-Bryan—who received numerous calls—to visit today after concerns were raised.  WTOC 11
  • Families can join a free family night at the Children's Museum of Pooler on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and enjoy educational activities and interactive exhibits for kids 10 and under (pre-registration is required due to limited space).  WTOC 11
  • Thousands will visit Savannah from Feb. 12 — 16 for several major events as the Nike Savannah Showdown at the Convention Center hosts youth volleyball while additional sports, music and comedy shows are planned at the Enmarket Arena, Civic Center and Lucas Theatre.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

  • Westwin Elements is planning a nickel refinery in Richmond Hill but faces five hurdles with site cleanup (hazardous materials), pollution permitting, zoning, financing, and raw material sourcing.   • SCAD announced BAM! A Celebration of Black Artists in Music for Black History Month. The concert will take place at Lucas Theatre for the Arts in Savannah at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 (second show at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15) with Broadway stars and student performers honoring Black music.  WJCL

  • During last week’s Savannah/Chatham Day in Atlanta, Visit Savannah CEO Joseph Marinelli met with Explore Georgia’s Deputy Commissioner Jay Markwalter to boost tourism.   • Kindergarten teacher Gracelyn Marshall returned to Savannah Christian, where she once studied, to work full circle by staying after class to help children learn to read (a moment she finds both meaningful and joyful).  WJCL
  • The Savannah Area Chamber, Visit Savannah and Visit Tybee launched a staff AI learning initiative on Monday, Feb. 9 that features a lunch-and-learn series offering hands-on practice with emerging tools.
