  • Dr. Jan Abernathie, a 96-year-old horticulturist at Wonder Gardens, shows no sign of retiring as he continues caring for plants—a passion that began during his youthful days at the University of Illinois and has spanned more than fifty years.   • Chatham County pup Murphy saw snow for the first time on Saturday and snapped at the falling flakes in a surprise display of curiosity. A local video captured her brisk reaction as she instinctively protected her home.  WJCL
  • The Southeast Georgia Leadership Forum announced its speakers for an event — scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Kehoe Iron Works at Trustees’ Garden in Savannah.  Savannah Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah Book Festival has announced its Free Festival Saturday schedule, which kicks off on Feb. 7 with nationally recognized authors and two panel discussions offering a deep-dive into literature. Attendees can buy books and food from local food trucks.  Savannah Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School districts across Southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry are adjusting their schedules amid a winter storm—Bulloch and Effingham County Schools are closed today while SC districts plan remote learning.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia DOT crews are treating hazardous, icy road conditions this morning in Chatham and surrounding counties + drivers are urged to exercise caution as plowing and salting efforts continue to clear the routes.  WTOC 11
  • Chatham Area Transit Authority resumes normal service today after suspending operations on Jan. 31 due to winter weather. The system will run fixed-route, mobility paratransit, Savannah Belles Ferry, DOT Shuttle, CAT Connect and open offices during regular hours.  WJCL

  • Tickets for the 50-game season starting Feb. 28 are available now at select outlets; limited seats remain for games at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah & exciting banana ball plays will energize the field.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Savannah Ghost Pirates snapped their losing streak Sunday afternoon by shutting out the Jacksonville Icemen 7-0 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena; Nick Granowicz scored a hat trick while Vinnie Purpura recorded 27 saves, and they will face the Icemen Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m.  WJCL
