COMMUNITY NEWS

  • With cold weather expected, a Savannah plumber advises homeowners to let faucets drip overnight and open cabinets to circulate warmer air (Georgia tops in pipe loss claims by State Farm) to reduce the risk of burst pipes in older homes.  WJCL
  • Savannah will open an overnight warming center at Greenbriar Children’s Center gym (3709 Hopkins St) tonight at 7 p.m. for shelter with controlled pet access and security, while additional options like The Salvation Army and Union Mission offer limited beds on a first-come, first-served basis.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Veteran Gregory Kindred—who discovered letters linking him to his great-uncle—volunteers at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, established in Savannah in January 1942, as the museum plans to open a new exhibit in 2027.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm is expected to bring snow through several local counties this weekend, so families are urged to set thermostats to at least 55 degrees, stock up on water, food & batteries, and follow safe generator practices.  Savannah Morning News
  • Today is set for snow with a high near 44 as meteorologist Jonathan Myers warns of precipitation starting after 1pm, turning to all snow by 4pm (winds up to 25 mph and new snow accumulation less than a half-inch) that may affect travel.  WJCL
  • A winter storm watch is in effect today for southeast Georgia and the Lowcountry, with up to 2 inches of snow possible and dangerously cold air arriving later. Residents north of Interstate 16 may see showers turning to snow this afternoon while the Savannah area could get light flurries.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia DOT crews are pre-treating roads and planning to plow 20,000 lane miles statewide as winter weather begins late Friday and lasts into Saturday — crews will operate 12-hour shifts around the clock — and motorists are urged to avoid travel.  WJCL

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former MLB star Jackie Bradley, Jr. is set to play full-time this season for the Indianapolis Clowns in the new Banana Ball Championship League—he accepted the role after a special appearance last summer and will debut on Feb. 27 at Florida State University’s baseball stadium in Tallahassee.  WJCL
