EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools announced a 99% graduation rate for career programs today — above the state average of 98.45%. School officials say strong career-focused education better prepares students for college, apprenticeships, or military service.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Winter weather is expected to affect Southeast Georgia this weekend as rain shifts to snow on Saturday from inland areas to the coast; Winter Storm Watches are in place and temperatures will drop to the upper teens to low 20s by Sunday morning.  WJCL
  • Winter Storm Gianna is set to intensify into a bomb cyclone this weekend, bringing snow to most metro areas and higher chances of over an inch in Athens and Augusta. No county is under a winter storm warning yet (a winter storm watch remains active in parts of the state).  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sentry South 26.1—from the Savannah Combat Readiness Training Center—is running through Jan. 31 in a vast military airspace off the coast; local residents may watch jets from the Savannah/Hilton Head Int’l Airport but must obey traffic signs.  WJCL
  • Chatham County released early numbers on energy use and is asking residents to share ideas for a new Energy Plan. County officials say the plan will help set future energy rules in the area.  WTOC 11
  • Residents in Savannah oppose a proposal to shift control of the volunteer fire department, with concerns that the planned takeover could disrupt established service + local officials review community objections.  WTOC 11
  • A year after a mid-air collision near Reagan National Airport that killed 67 people including a Richmond Hill man, the family of pilot Sam Lilley attended the National Transportation Safety Board's final safety hearing Tuesday—releasing recommendations to adopt ADS-B technology and a new ROTOR Act that awaits House approval.  WJCL

  • CodaPet has added a new licensed veterinarian to offer in-home pet euthanasia in Savannah today. Dr. Victoria Torres will provide compassionate end-of-life care to pets at home, giving families a more peaceful option.  Savannah Business Journal
