COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Mary's Community Center is offering free tax prep for households earning under $80,000 through Feb. 28 with services on Mondays and Thursdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. - Noon at 812 W- 36th Street.  The Savannah Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah Arts Academy is presenting its all-school musical Grease today at 7:00 p.m. in the John Varnedoe Auditorium & will hold additional shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday featuring a full cast, live pit band, and special cameo appearances.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Massie Heritage Center is hosting 'Process to Print,' a pop-up exhibit celebrating African American illustrators with banners showing their creative process; the exhibit runs Feb. 2–28, and a free artist talk with a book signing takes place on Feb. 27 at 207 E.   • The 37th Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival will run throughout February (starting Feb. 1) with events including a tribute ceremony at the African American Monument, a Gospel concert, and a dance performance that honor African American heritage.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Historic Lucas Theatre for the Arts reopens Saturday at 7 p.m. in Savannah for its Wonders of the Wurlitzer event featuring SCAD's 1920s theater organ and a screening of Charlie Chaplin's silent film The Kid after bats were removed from its rafters; the Lucas Cafe reopens Monday.  WTOC 11

  • Savannah State University's Honors Program will host a wreath-laying at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Richard R. Wright Sr. bust, in front of Wright Hall on campus+ a keynote address in the Student Union will follow at 12 p.m.  The Savannah Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A coastal storm is set to impact Savannah this weekend as a low-pressure system forms off the southeast coast—Saturday might see showers and cold air with temperatures near freezing and a chance of wintry mix or snow later in the day.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chatham County will hold its first virtual public kickoff meeting for a comprehensive energy plan today at 9:30 a.m. The plan will chart a roadmap to cut energy use, boost renewables, and promote clean energy initiatives across the community.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Georgia officials urge residents to get a flu shot now as cases rise after the holidays. The CDC projects a severe season and notes it takes two weeks after vaccination for protection to build - shots are available at local clinics, pharmacies, and doctors’ offices.  The Savannah Tribune

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Savannah Restaurant Week kicked off Wednesday with 19 local restaurants offering special three-course menus through Feb. 8 to draw in diners. Organizers urge guests to make reservations to avoid long waits & support local dining during the slow winter season.  WJCL
  • A new study from MetLife Pet Insurance shows Georgia pet lovers favor the bulldog for dogs and the Savannah cat for cats (the report examined Google Trends data from Nov. 2024 through Nov. 2025).  Savannah Morning News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Springfield College football players from Savannah, Aaziah Scott, JT Kinsey and Christian Johnson-Hall earned NEWMAC honors for the 2025 season; Scott made the First Team plus Kinsey and Johnson-Hall earned Second Team honors as the trio helped secure their fifth straight championship.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Savannah State's men's basketball team won 62-54 over LeMoyne-Owen on Jan. 22 at Tiger Arena (Zyere Edwards added 13 points and six steals to help secure the win), marking their third consecutive victory.  The Savannah Tribune
  • The Savannah Ghost Pirates postponed their weekend games against the Swamp Rabbits due to weather. The rescheduled games will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:05 p.m. ET and on Wednesday, April 8 at Bon Secours Wellness Arena (away).  The Savannah Tribune
