CULTURE NEWS

  • Local screenwriter Malcolm Sullivan (founder of the awards) has launched the Savannah Screenplay Awards with a $5,000 grand prize and additional prizes; submissions are open through Aug. 1. The contest, held in Savannah, aims to connect writers with agents and producers to boost the local film industry.  Savannah Morning News
  • Historic synagogue Congregation Mickve Israel, founded in 1733 & continuing as both a house of worship and museum, preserves a nearly 300-year legacy in Savannah’s historic district while hosting regular services and cultural events for the Jewish community.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah’s historic Lucas Theatre is closed today after bats were found in the rafters, and the adjacent cafe is also closed as a precaution. SCAD has hired a licensed wildlife management team to remove the bats while a film screening has been moved to Trustees Theater.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Savannah residents, small business owners, and city leaders met in downtown Tuesday to ask state and federal agencies for cleaner, more affordable energy amid rising power bills that force tough financial choices + Georgia Power said it will freeze base rates and lower monthly costs by about $8.50.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools invites students, families, staff and community members (the survey takes about 30 minutes) to share feedback via an online survey open from Jan. 20 until Feb. 2 that will guide its strategic plan for priorities and investments through 2031.  WJCL
  • The Asa H. Gordon Library received 214 books on social justice and the American South on Tuesday, Jan. 20, donated by Dr. Melvin Johnson and his wife. The titles, chosen as part of the Lillian Smith Book Awards review, span works published from 1996 to 2024.  WTOC 11
  • Gov. Brian Kemp has proposed a $325 million need-based scholarship program to help low-income college students. The DREAMS Scholarship Program would start with $25 million in aid from lottery reserves and private donations, pending approval by the General Assembly.  Savannah Morning News

  • A hazardous weather outlook warns of wintry precipitation in parts of Georgia this weekend. In Savannah, rain is expected on Sunday plus temperatures may drop to 28 with only a slight chance of freezing rain on Monday.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters on Sapelo Island voted Tuesday on a referendum to reverse a 2023 zoning change that doubled allowed home sizes (from 1,400 to 3,000 sqft) in Hogg Hummock amid concerns that larger homes could trigger steep property tax increases for local Black landowners.  WJCL

  • Savannah Bananas players and five other teams returned today to gear up for the Banana Ball season and mark 10 years of growth. The tour will start in late February and visit 75 stadiums while the team works to meet record-high ticket demand.  WJCL
