- ➤ The City of Savannah, with the Savannah Martin Luther Day Observance Committee + Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, will rename the Civic Center in Dr. King’s honor on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. at 301 W. - ➤ Canady’s Heating delivered a truckload of new coats to the United Way of the Coastal Empire on Tuesday, Jan. 6 after wrapping up its sixth annual Coats for Kids drive; the campaign collected new coats for children aged infant to 17 across Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty + Long counties. - ➤ Savannah will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade on Monday at 10 a.m. at East Liberty & Broad Streets in the Downtown Historic District. Mayor Van Johnson said officials aim to host the largest parade in the country, planned to last three hours. WTOC 11
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ At a Bryan County Commission meeting on Tuesday, residents discussed a proposed nickel refinery near Richmond Hill that could create 800 jobs with competitive wages, although some raised safety and environmental concerns. Officials will further review the project at a town hall on Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Pembroke. WJCL

- ➤ The Chatham Retired Educators Association visited Woodville-Tompkins High School on Jan. 5, presenting snacks to honor faculty dedication. - ➤ Residents at a special Savannah Housing Authority meeting expressed concerns over the demolition and redevelopment of historic Yamacraw Village, hoping to secure guarantees for current families as plans await federal HUD approval.
