COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since a July roof collapse left it without a sanctuary, Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church has held Sunday services in Congregation Mickve Israel’s space, and both congregations continue a longstanding support initiative — a gesture of mutual care.  WTOC 11
  • Residents can skate at Enmarket Arena today (8:15 to 9:45 p.m.) in a partnership between the City and the Savannah Ghost Pirates; additional sessions run on Jan. 15, 28 and 29 with skate rental included in the $20 adult and $15 child admissions.  WTOC 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Chamber released its 2025 Impact Report, detailing advocacy wins such as lowering state income taxes for retired military members and investing in a regional water plan, while hosting 101 events + launching member programs to strengthen local business ties.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rock the Country festival, honoring the nation’s 250th birthday, will feature Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, and Jelly Roll at Ottawa Farms in Bloomingdale on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30 — tickets start at about $90 with sales beginning Friday.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Savannah Irish Festival (34th year) will take place Feb. 7-8 at Alee Temple on Eisenberg Drive, featuring live Irish music, traditional dance, food, and family-friendly cultural events. Local title sponsor Wexford supports this celebration of Irish heritage.  WTOC 11

  • On Jan. 13, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual Economic Outlook luncheon where speakers presented national, state and local forecasts that showed modest growth in the greater area for 2026 + national policy and Federal Reserve actions could influence the outlook.  Savannah Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Savannah-Chatham Public School System will launch its Strategic Plan Stakeholder Survey on Jan. 20 to gather feedback from students+ families, staff, and community members for a five-year plan guiding programs through 2031; responses are due by Feb. 2.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Georgia received $500,000 in federal funding secured by Rep. Buddy Carter to protect endangered right whales in coastal calving areas. The grant will let the Georgia Conservancy use AIS technology + alert boaters to avoid whale zones and support safe trade.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport officials at a downtown update meeting explained the renovations at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport which include adding four new gates, building a new interchange, and expanding the parking to 9,000 spots—efforts aimed at modernizing the facility while preserving its southern charm.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Chatham County Hospital Authority Trust awarded $964,000 to four nonprofits to expand health care access for uninsured residents — boosting primary care, hospice support, mental health, and chronic disease management services countywide.  WTOC 11
