COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coastal Georgia and the lowcountry will hold MLK parades and unity walks to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 10, Jan. 17, and Jan. 19 (with expected road closures and increased travel times near downtown routes).  WTOC 11
  • The Front Porch reached its 2,000th youth assessment, helping families in Chatham County access key academic, mental, physical and social resources. The center works with local schools (and healthcare providers, juvenile court, and nonprofits) to connect children with early support.  The Savannah Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyundai Motor Group announced it will use AI-powered Atlas robots at its EV plant in Bryan County by 2028 to enhance worker safety and create high-skilled jobs — the robots will handle repetitive, physically demanding tasks designed by Boston Dynamics.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Celebrate fashion icon André Leon Talley’s lasting impact at a panel hosted by the Evans Center for African American Studies with cultural experts at the SCAD Museum of Art today at 6 p.m. Antoine Gregory and LaQuan Smith will discuss Talley’s influence on design and education.  The Savannah Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown (14 years of experience as a District 2 representative) announced her candidacy for school board president at the Forsyth Park Band Shell on Monday, Jan. 5. She said she plans to boost achievement through innovation and career education for students.  The Savannah Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Candler County commissioners voted (3-2) on Jan. 5 to reject a proposal to expand the 20-acre Metter landfill to accept trash from 14 counties, with more than 100 residents voicing concerns over water contamination and increased truck traffic. The decision leaves the region facing a growing waste disposal challenge.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city is proposing a Historic Property Overlay District to protect the 1898 Powder Magazine (a building that once stored explosives) off Ogeechee Road. The proposal now awaits a City Council vote after recommendation by the planning commission on Jan. 7.  Savannah Morning News
  • Pooler City Council denied a variance request on Jan. 7 that would reduce the 50-foot buffer between Tom Triplett Park and a planned commercial development. The 4 to 3 vote came after residents voiced concerns that the change might disturb the park’s quiet atmosphere — protecting the community’s cherished space.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chatham County Health Department is offering free flu shots for uninsured children and adults during January to combat high flu activity; patients with insurance may also get no-cost shots as most plans cover the vaccine (Georgia flu scale is 13).  Savannah Business Journal
  • Savannah Speech and Hearing Center will launch a free Torticollis Clinic in February 2026, offering 30-minute screenings by appointment every Monday. Families with concerns about head tilt or motor skills can access early pediatric therapy (early treatment is most effective).  The Savannah Tribune
  • St. Joseph’s/Candler will offer free hernia screenings from Master Hernia Surgeons on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 AM to 2 PM at Candler Hospital and its Pooler Campus. Residents needing evaluation can call (912-819-2778) to schedule a screening.  The Savannah Tribune
  • St. Joseph’s/Candler African-American Health Information and Resource Center will host a diabetes screening event on Monday, Jan. 19 from 1 to 4 PM at 1910 Abercorn Street following the MLK Day parade. Attendees will receive free blood tests, eye screenings, a foot clinic, and enjoy chair yoga + line dancing.  The Savannah Tribune

  • On January 3, the Savannah State men’s basketball team lost to Morehouse 64-62 in Atlanta after eight ties and four lead changes; alumni watched the close contest and the team will host Fort Valley State today at Tiger Arena.  The Savannah Tribune
