COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Each January, the rescue center asks locals to donate used Christmas trees for animals to enjoy new scents and textures. The center received 30 trees in five to six days thanks to strong community support.  WJCL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Savannah Fire responded to a dryer fire at an apartment on the 4500 block of Ogeechee Road Saturday at about 12:30 p.m., where a resident used a fire extinguisher to control the blaze + crews ventilated the area and checked for residual heat.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Georgia Superintendent candidate visited Savannah Saturday to share plans to update the outdated Quality Basic Education Formula and boost parent engagement. Thornton is competing with others as the general election approaches on Nov. 3.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Storms hit Southeast Georgia and the Lowcountry on Saturday between 1 and 7 p.m., producing downpours and gusty winds (a slight risk for isolated tornadoes) while Sunday stays cooler with highs in the upper 50s. Temperatures will climb into the 70s later this week.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • An aggressive flu strain has caused rising hospitalizations and 29 deaths in Georgia since October as officials urge vaccination for everyone over six months. The Coastal Public Health District (Savannah) said free flu shots for uninsured children and adults will be offered in Hinesville from Jan. 5 through Jan. 9.  The Current
