- ➤ Otha Thornton, President of the National PTA Association and State Superintendent candidate, will speak on education at the Hungry Club Forum of Savannah Saturday, Jan. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the May St. YMCA (1110 May St.) where community members can discuss issues and solutions. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Savannah native Julia Roland debuts her exhibition 'A Seat at the Table' at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center starting Jan. 9. She will give an Artist Talk (at 6 p.m. on Jan. 8) before the free show runs through Dec. 6. The Savannah Tribune
- ➤ Musician Sean Gaskell will perform his West African kora at Bull Street Library on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the free concert will be held at 2002 Bull Street — between 36th and 37th. The Savannah Tribune
- ➤ Tybee Island Historical Society hosted history talks in 2025 to honor the 250th anniversary at two venues. They were held at the Tybee Post Theatre on Jan. 24 and Feb. 6 and at the Guard House on Feb. 20 and Feb. 25 with topics from colonial shipwrecks to silent movies. The Savannah Tribune

- ➤ Savannah State University was named the top HBCU in Georgia for student experience and best value by the Wall Street Journal College Pulse Index, ranking ahead of ten other institutions. President Dr. Jermaine Whirl celebrated the achievement and noted improvements in academics, affordability, and campus life. WTOC 11
- ➤ The Mediation Center was chosen by the Georgia Department of Education as an official partner to provide nine free Mental Health Awareness Training courses for educators statewide. Its staff will hold live sessions with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System in February (covering topics like suicide prevention and conflict resolution). The Savannah Tribune

- ➤ A guide to over 50 local outdoor events invites Savannah residents to explore hikes, oyster roasts, and wildlife programs throughout the seasons; events include today’s New Year’s Hike at Skidaway Island plus a Polar Plunge at Tybee, with more adventures running through summer. - ➤ South Georgia Tormenta FC has signed Ghanaian defender Moses Mensah for its 2026 USL League One season, pending (league and federation approval). - ➤ Savannah State University named Thomas Howard as head football coach on Dec. 22; the Riverdale native will begin his new role on Jan. 5, replacing Aaron Kelton following four seasons with the Tigers. The Savannah Tribune
- ➤ Savannah State football players Darrian Bell and Tony Rountree have been invited to play in the Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Tulane University’s Yulman Stadium in New Orleans — Bell, a conference solo tackling leader, will join the contest as one of the season’s top defenders.
